Sabres fall further back

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils last night, pushing the Buffalo Sabres five points out of a playoff spot.

What has been the Sabres biggest problems this year?  An inability to take teams out of games.  The Sabres have time and again this season allowed opposing teams to hang on to life in games.

Another big problem, the third period.  Like Pavlov’s dogs when the whistle blows to start the third period when the Sabres are tied or losing – players automatically assume defeat.

The Sabres have 12 games left and have to be much better than a .500 team if they expect to make it into the playoffs.  The best run the Sabres had in such a stretch was when the started the season 9-3-3.  The Sabres need to get back into that mindset, or face another very long and uncertain off season.
