Vanek plays hero, and goat in same game

Thomas Vanek’s back may hurt today, as he carried the Buffalo Sabres to overtime last night against the Atlanta Thrashers with a two goal performance in a 3-2 loss.

Unfortunately for the Sabres, the back broke with 30 seconds or so left in overtime as Vanek set up Kovalchuk for the game winner.  I don’t think I find fault with Vanek however, as he is trying to win for his team.

Who I do find fault with last night was newest Sabres Dominic Moore.  Did you see the second goal by Atlanta?  Miller made an incredible save, and instead of flattening Slava Kozlov to prevent a second chance, Moore tried playing a stick battle with Kozlov that he lost.

The Sabres do gain a point in the game, but when it comes to look back on this season and realize why we missed the playoffs again, we only have to look at the season series against Atlanta.  0 wins.  If you count last nights game, the last two games were started with a Buffalo lead that was squandered.

The biggest surprise for me last night though, was Tony Lydman getting behind the Atlanta defense, maybe his shootout win the other night was enough confidence for him, I am still not that eager to see Lydman trying to get a few breakaways every now and then.

It looks like it could be another very long off season.
