Ghosts of Sabres past

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

It wasn’t a pleasant sight to watch the 2005-2006 Buffalo Sabres get dismantled – after winning the hearts of fans across the Sabre Nation.  But what is interesting is to see how many of those that have been passed on by the Sabres organization have struggled.
Mike Grier left because the Sabres let Jay McKee walk away – he didn’t think the Sabres had the organizational fortitude to win.
McKee struggled in St. Louis after leaving Buffalo for the money, primarily based on an injury.  His contract was just bought out so the Blues can save on the cap space for other [...]

Final part of Aud to come down

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

In a ceremony today, a time capsule from 1939 will be opened, just prior to the final work in bringing the last corner of the Memorial Auditorium to the ground.
Once the site of many fond memories of concerts, basketball, hockey, soccer, and lacrosse, will now be a vacant lot until developers can decide what to do with the site.  I expect many people to be down by the Aud, to give one last farewell to an old friend.

Is Regier set to sharpen his Sabres?

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

Maybe he is taking some heat for not making the playoffs for two straight seasons after providing a shock and awe team out of the lockout.  Maybe he took notes when the Bills targetted and acquired top name players in the hopes of getting better and ending a decade long drought.
The simple fact of the matter is, standing idly by on July 1st has been the downfall of the Buffalo Sabres for several seasons now.
The Sabres do not need to go out there later this week and make a splash right away, spending money that might come back to haunt [...]

Deadline: July 1st

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The next hurdle for the Buffalo Sabres before we can entertain thoughts of seeing that clean sheet of ice again is free agency.
As I consider writing some of the names the Sabres have lost on this day in history, recent history even, I find myself reaching for my maximum strength Maalox Advanced formula (Cherry flavored, for those wondering).  This year should be no different – except the names are not as big as in years past.
We all know Maxim Afinogenov has played his last game as a Sabre, I have said since about mid season that Max will probably end [...]

Round 5,6,7

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Sabres round off the draft with Mark Adams, Conner Knapp, and Maxime Legault in the draft.
It really looks like the Sabres have tried to bolster their roster with some size, with all six of their draft picks at six foot or better.
What is left to be seen however is how soon these guys can get on the NHL roster in Buffalo to help renergize a team that has really petered out in the last two seasons.

Third and fourth round selections

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Portland Pirates, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Buffalo Sabres have made the following selections in the draftL
Round Three – Brayden McNabb, defensemen.

In the fourth round the Sabres have selected Marcus Foligno, son of Sabres fan favorite Mike Foligno.

It looks like the Sabres are finally listening to the critics who have labeled them as small and not tough.  The Sabres have selected three guys that are definitely going to provide some muscle to the lineup, if they can crack it.
Unfortunately, the Sabres  don’t like to put prospects in the lineup first year – another trend that could change if they want to put a different type of [...]

Kassian spells the end of Peters?

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

With a July 1st free agency date looming, and the selection of a tough right wing, the Sabres could be preparing to part with tough guy Andrew Peters in favor of someone who might be more apt to putting the puck on the net as well as sticking up for his teammates.
“You want to talk nasty? You want to talk Milan Lucic? That’s Zach Kassian. He’s been drafted by a team with lots of undersized players. He was an organizational need for the Sabres.” – Pierre McGuire
With the right amount of grooming, it appears the Sabres may have made the [...]

With the 13th overall pick in the draft…

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Portland Pirates, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Buffalo Sabres have selected Zach Kassian with the 13th overall pick in the 2009 entry draft.

One of the more NHL ready players in this entry draft, he may have a decent chance of starting on the team this year, however, with the Sabres do like to have their prospects sit in the wings and mature in the AHL this year.  More than likely we are going to see Kassian start the season in Portland, and make the trip back and forth as needed.  Depending on what happens on July 1st, there is a small chance he is on the [...]

Excited for the entry draft? Not likely.

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL | COMMENTS: None Yet

Getting excited for the NHL entry draft is like getting excited to go have a root canal done.  We are already at the point in the draft where it will be two to three seasons if not longer before these players are NHL bound.
The Islanders started the night of in typical fashion, taking the highly touted John Tavares.  While right now he will sign a rookie maximum deal, if he scores 20 goals this season they will be talking at least a 15 year extension worth probably more than the Pheonix Coyotes entire franchise is worth.  What a way to [...]
