Michael Jackson vs. Buffalo Sabres - A battle of number ones

Michael Jackson had 13 number one hits from 1971 to 2003.  The Buffalo Sabres had just seven top 5 first rounds picks throughout the same time period.

Michael Jacksons music inspired and touched many (ok, jokes are aside now, maybe “touched” wasn’t the right word) – and many consider him to be the King of Pop, and a genius when it comes to music and choreography.

The Buffalo Sabres have failed miserably in the first round of the draft historically.  Notable first rounders include Gil Perrault, Thomas Vanek, Rick Martin, Jim Schoenfeld, Lee Fogolin, Bob Sauve, Rick Seiling, Larry Playfair, Phil Housley, Tom Barrasso, Mikael Anderson, Pierre Turgeon, Brad May, etc. etc.

Tonight as the draft starts the Buffalo Sabres are set to select only once tonight, the 13th overall pick in the first round.  There second round pick was used last year to acquire veteran blue liner Craig Rivet.

Notable lucky 13s for the Sabres :

Larry Playfair, Phillipe Bouche, Drew Stafford,

13th Pick Flops:

Joel Savage, Marek Zagrapan (to no fault of his own).

Three out of five selection isnt bad for a team that consistently misses the playoffs and has never won a Stanley Cup.

Lets hope the Sabres have a draft more like “Thriller” and less like “Stranger in Moscow
