Sabres sign free agent defensemen

Posted by: Tim Redinger

The Buffalo Sabres jumped into the mix on the opening day of free agency signing journeymen blueliner Steve Montador to a 2 year deal.

Montador has seen time with Calgary, Florida, Anaheim, and Boston – and was part of the 2001 St Johns Flames Calder Cup winning team.

Montador has 18 career NHL goals over an 8 year period, and has never played a complete NHL season.

I would have to give this free agent signing a grade of a D.  If you are going to make money available for a multi-year deal on a defensemen, I would have invested in Jaroslav Spacek, rather than a deal on a guy who has not been able to compete in the NHL for a starting job.

Other notable moves so far today is the jaw dropping 12 year, 5.2 million a year contract that the Chicago Blackhawks have awarded Marian Hossa.  Apparently they want him to dissappear in the playoffs as well.

Former Sabres Goaltender Dwayne Roloson will be in town more next season, signing a deal with the New York Islanders.
