Blockbuster deal changes the face of the Northeast

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

Brian Burke finally got tired of losing.  I don’t think anyone thought the Toronto Maple Leafs would be worth their weight in Air Canada Center ticket prices, but I think it is safe to say that most people would have thought Brian Burke would have made more moves on this hapless team before now.
After watching a 3-0 lead dissolve into a 5-3 loss, Brian Burke decided to pull the trigger on a move before the Olympic trade freeze.  With that, he brought goaltender J.S. Giguere and defensemen Dion Phaneuf to the East Coast.  Check out Puck Daddy’s post for the [...]

Sabres Gamenight: Boston Bruins

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Game Night, NHL, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

Boston comes to town tonight with the hopes of getting over the latest slump that they have been in.
The Sabres look to keep their home game point streak alive.  After beating New Jersey on the return end of a lengthy road trip, the Sabres are now 8-0-3 at home in their last 11 games.
With a healthy roster, Lindy Ruff will re-insert Montador and Lydman into the lineup, both hoping to resurge their game which got them benched in the first place.  MacArthur finds himself back in the lineup as well, and Kennedy finds himself as the odd forward out.
It does [...]

Miller to wear new mask for Olympics

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Players, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

Ryan Miller will be wearing a custom mask for the Olympics, shown above.
Warwick Mask & Equipment Inc. is outfitting Miller with the mask, and also will be putting  a mask on Nabakov (Russia).
No word yet on if the personal messages that Miller has on the back of his NHL masks will carry over.

Connolly chases 39 year old record

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Players, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The original Buffalo Sabre, Gilbert Perrault holds many franchise records for the Buffalo Sabres.  While probably not as historic as the home run chase several years ago, die hard Sabres fans have to be watching this one.

Buffalo Sabres forward Tim Connolly is chasing Perraults record set in 1971 of scoring at least one point in 18 games.  With his assist in the Vancouver game, is number is now at 16.
If he scores in tonights contest, it will raise the number to 17, with a chance to tie it at home against the Bruins on Friday.  Heading out of town to [...]

Sabres Gamenight: New Jersey Devils

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Game Night, NHL, Players, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

Its back at home for the Sabres, and thank god for that.  I am drained after a West Coast trip.  I am still not over missing an entire year of hockey thanks to the lockout (ok, I was in Iraq that year and would have missed the games anyway – but I didn’t even have the chance to follow them even sparingly).  So therefore, I did not miss a single second of this past road trip, and boy did my sleep suffer greatly for it.  Add in a sick two year old  and a pregnant wife – instant nights of no [...]

I’m ready for it to be “Miller Time” again!

AUTHOR: blackops | IN: Game Night, NHL, News, Players, Sabres | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Without a doubt Ryan Miller has been the best player the Sabres have put on the ice this season and the biggest reason for their success. Though he impressed us all season and has been in the top 3 in almost every major goaltending stat he’s seemed “mortal” on this road trip. I don’t know what or who to blame directly for his slight slack in performance but Ill start with Lindy Ruff. I love Ruff as a coach but he has to learn slow and steady wins the race, throwing Miller to the wolves every night in an attempt [...]

Sabres Gamenight: Vancouver Canucks

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Game Night, NHL, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

Seeking to strike gold, the Sabres struck out in California this past week end, picking up a single point out of a possible six.  Hoping to cement their lead in the Northeast on this trip away from home, the Sabres will be lucky to stumble home with 8 out of the possible 14.  While their lead is still secure in the East, the extra padding would have been nice.  At the start of the road trip, we talked about Wednesday nights game being a race for first place in the East.  The Sabres would only be catching New Jersey in [...]

The Sabres a top team midway….but why and how?

AUTHOR: blackops | IN: NHL, News, Players, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

We all love our Sabres and we all know they have what most would consider a comfortable lead atop the northeast division at this point of the season; they are also in the top 5 in the league overall.
Its easy to look at the standings everyday and simply see Buffalo still on top and getting points on a regular basis. But after watching many games this season and listening to various sports reporters I’ve began thinking a bit cynical. Thoughts creep into my mind such as “who is the real superstar on this team, other then Miller”? Now we [...]

Sabres Gamenight: Los Angeles Kings

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: Game Night, NHL, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Sabres continue their season long road trip.  Their last time out was the first time they lost, hell didn’t even get a point in over a month.
Tonight they will look forward to getting over the doldrums of the first period, that put them down 4-0 against Anaheim.  What the Sabres need to be thinking about was the effort they put out in Pheonix, and ignore what happened in Anaheim.  It is an 82 game season, you can’t win them all, and when your winning as often as the Sabres are – you definitely don’t want to dwell on the [...]

Sabres fall to Anaheim after sloppy 1st Period

AUTHOR: Tim Redinger | IN: NHL, Sabres | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Sabres did it again, they spotted an opponent 20 minutes, and were down 4-0 because of it.
This hole was a little too big to climb out of, but they almost did it.  Ryan Miller was near perfect in relief of Patrick Lalime – but a late third period tally by the Ducks erased the Sabres hopes of at least getting a point.  Hecht pulled the Sabres back to within 1 with the only goal that end of the arena saw, but with under a minute to play, getting that fifth goal seemed elusive.
As much smack as I talked about [...]
