Its been a long three years without the playoffs, but one thing is for certain, the Sabres will be playing beyond April 6th, 2010. The only thing left between now and then is a divisional title. Buffalo currently sits atop the Northeast Division with 92 points. They have eight games, or a possible 16 points remaining.
Chasing them is the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadians. Montreal has six games remaining and is ten points behind the Sabres. All the Sabres have to do is win one more and Montreal can kiss their division title hopes so long.
The worst possible case for the Buffalo Sabres, is if Ottawa wins their remaining games. This would put them at 99 points. Now if Ottawa wins out, that means the Sabres will lose at least one more game. If the Sabres won all their remaining games except the Ottawa game that would put them at 106 points, and a win in the Division. The Sabres could make the math really simple and defeat the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa on April 10th. Or, don’t even let it go that long. There are six games between now and the final Ottawa game. you win four of six, and the division is yours, grab any 8 points from now and to the end of the season – and the division is yours. 16 possible points – and we only have 8 to go to get to 100, oh yeah, and Ottawa can only get to 99 by winning out.
Me personally, Im hoping Ottawa tanks it all to hell, and the Sabres find a way to beat them on April 10 – forcing them to miss the playoffs. That is what I’ll be dreaming tonight.
