Sabres draft potential
So we are not that far out from the draft, so its time to see who the Sabres will be selecting. The Buffalo Sabres hold the 23rd overall pick in the draft this year, and there are quite a few mock drafts out there that have us selecting different prospects. We will take a look at a few. Jarred Tinordi (MyNHLDraft.com, Sportscity.com) D, USA – the success of Tyler Myers could have the Sabres thinking this guy could make the jump to the NHL right away. At 6 feet 5 inches and 205 pounds, he could add some additional power [...]
Memorial Day Message
While most are preparing to spend the following hours drinking and enjoying some BBQing with friends and family (as well as Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals), let us pause a moment and give thanks to all those who have served, veterans past and present who have given the last measure of devotion, those that have fought, bled, and died for the great principles, truths, and freedoms that this great country was founded on. Freedom, is not free. We should never forget that. The moment we as a collective nation forget about the high cost of freedom, we will [...]
NHL to expand
Ok, so I lured you in with a catchy title, and no. the NHL has not released information that they are going to expand the league beyond the 30 teams they currently have. What they are expanding is the NHL Winter Classic, the time of the year when the NHL sends two of its franchise teams out in the elements to play as the game was originally designed – in the snow, cold and wind. When the concept first came up, I did not like the idea of the NHL adding the elments into a regular season game, especially when [...]
Game One: Chicago 1 Philly 0
Philly struck first, and I got my hopes up, and then the teams traded goals until the score reached 5-5. And then I committed a cardinal sin of hockey nation; I fell asleep as the third period started. I would love to say that it was the result of too many alcoholic beverages while celebrating the Stanley Cup finals – but it was the result of the lack of sleep from having a newborn baby. When I woke up in the wee hours of the morning to an infomercial; I quickly grabbed my phone to check the scores. Chicago 6 [...]
Stanley Cup Finals
So through the playoffs this year I am 8-5. Pretty respectable. I have laid that on the line and am probably setting myself up for an 8-6 overall record, as much as I hate to say this, but I am selecting the Philadelphia Flyers in seven games. I don’t think the ‘Hawks are going to have an easy time dispatching the Flyers like they did the Sharks – and the longer the series goes, the more the Flyers will hang in this one. Unless Leighton has an implosion – he has hit th stride that Philadelphia needs. And I am [...]
Rink Side Rants Tonight at 9PM
Are you ready for one last 45 minute episode of Rink Side Rants? Tonight not only do you get your normal weekly dose of Tim and Frank – but we also have Jeff from Blackhawk Up and Eugene from Broad Street Buzz. While we would like to have them on at the same time, schedules don’t permit that so we are going to have a two part show. Broad Street Buzz will be on at around 9:15 and Blackhawk Up around 9:30 (Eastern Time). We will have some lines open if you want to call in and ask the Fansided [...]
Steve Yzerman now with Lightning
For the first time since 1983, someone other than the Detroit Red Wings will be giving Steve Yzerman his paychecks. The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed the retired Red Wing as their newest General Manager. Yzerman has never held that position in the NHL – although he was GM of the gold medal winning Canadien National Team at the Olympics. While he has never been a General Manager, the Lighnting owners have to think that with reputation around the league, it might be easier to lure talented free agents to the Sunrise State in order to make the team more [...]
Philadelphia ends Montreals run in Five
For Montreal, all playoff season long the motto had to be, one game at a time. They fell down 3-1 to mighty Washington before toppling the giants in seven. They traded blows back and forth with the reigning Stanley Cup champions before ousting Sid the Kid in seven games. But there wasn’t enough magic in the century old uniforms to propel the Habs into the Stanley Cup Finals – as tonight was their final game. In probably an easy series for the Flyers despite losing game three, Michael Leighton shut out the Montreal Canadiens three times in five games to [...]
Chicago sends San Jose back to drawing board
In four games, the San Jose Sharks have lost all the momentum of the last three seasons of trying to obtain a goal of winning the Stanley Cup. Hell they can’t even get their hands on the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl that is now in the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks. While the city of Chicago celebrates their first trip to the finals in 18 years – the fans of San Jose have to wonder what it is going to take to see San Jose join the list of cities to add championship banners to their rafters. I can kind [...]
