Although the NHL awards show was like watching “America’s Next Top Comic” bloopers it was worth it all to Sabre fans. Ryan Miller personally stole the show winning 2 awards..the Vezina (top goaltender) and the NHL Foundation Player Award, while Tyler Myers brought home the Calder Cup (rookie of the year). I believe these 3 awards say alot about the character and dedication of these 2 players. Being the best goaltender is not just an award it is a season long dedication to excellence and doing everything in your power to win night after night. Miller had absolutely no help from a backup goaltender and played virtually the whole season including a silver medal Olympic run. Miller truely deserved this award in everyway.
Tyler Myers won the Calder Cup meaning he was voted the best rookie in the league. Normally the Calder Cup is won by a high draft pick hot shot but this year it was Myers. Myers began his career with a 10 day contract mainly to see if he could make it in the NHL or if the AHL was going to be his home for a couple years. Myers left no doubt within the first few games that he was here to stay. Myers became an instant fan favorite and team favorite. Myers won a shootout for the team near the end of his 10 day contract and at the ripe age of 20 was laying the foundation of something special for Sabre fans. He was a staple on penalty kills and power plays and rarely make mistakes despite his rookie status. Myers won this award early and left little doubt the rest of the season. Congrats to Ryan Miller and Tyler Myers.
