Often times we take a break for the real world of hockey around here, for a hard look at the lighter side of hockey, the one we can play with our thumbs.
There are all types of people who game. Some are more serious about it than others, some are better at it than others, and some just cheat really well.
How many of us can remember that kid growing up – who would laugh at you because you couldn’t get passed a level that they beat, only to figure out after you beat the real way that they hit up down up left down right A B down down to get unlimited life? (Ok – you either know someone like that or you are that someone).
Then came Kontrol Freek. They actually have three different models, the TDFreek; The FPSFreek; and the SpeekFreek.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a set of the TDFreeks to try out. Now, they are designed for the football gamer – I mean they even look like little footballs. Now, I am not much into the Madden or other football games, but I figured, well whats good for the goose is good for the, well that is so bad an analogy here.
So the transformation was simple, here’s the before:
About thirty second later:
It didn’t add anything to the weight or size of the control – but it did put an extra inch on the thumbsticks – which took a good period to get use to (Yes, I tried it not on a football game, but rather EA Sports NHL 10.
If you’re looking for a game changing experience to make you better, because all your friends give your goalie sunburn, its not going to help.
What the KontrolFreek controllers do – is help you with the minute aspects of the game.
What I noticed the most when playing with the TDFreeks on my controller, faceoffs were easier to win, and it was easier to pick my corner in the net (which didn’t guarantee a goal, but it made it a little easier to put the puck right where I wanted it).
I got into a fight with the controller as well, on purpose to see how well they worked. I can’t very well tell you yet, because, well my Be A Pro rookie picked Shea Weber and got his ass handed to him, so I didn’t have much time to respond before I was carted off the ice to a volley of digital boos.
For the average gamer – that doesn’t play all that often – probably not the game accessory you should pick up. For a serious gamer that want’s to pick up that extra edge, I wouldn’t start playing online anymore without it.

It seems like an interesting addition to the controller.
