Despite Kassian’s reputation, he still is a top prospect

Alright guys and gals, it’s time to talk prospects  and I have one in mind- Zack Kassian. I have truly mixed emotions about this young-gun for obvious reasons. We all know about his brutally disgusting elbow that found him suspended for 20 games last year and we also know about his arrest for “allegedly” being in a bar altercation. However, with all that aside, I think he is the most promising young player the Sabres have.

I’m typically a person who prefers character guys over showy players, but I think the Sabres have had too many character guys and I think it is time for a change of pace. Kassian isn’t an overly gifted scorer, nor is he a flashy playmaker, but the kid is tough as nails. Don’t get me wrong, Kassian is talented, but what catches my eye is his grit- something the Sabres have been lacking the past few years.

I don’t think Kassian will find a roster spot with the Sabres this year, but I do see him finding a spot in the near future. What’s not to like about the 6-foot 3, 215 pound behemoth? He does have a decent scoring touch and he is good with the puck; he isn’t afraid of digging in the corners or back checking; and best of all, he has a mean streak.

Now, I don’t want him to come into the NHL and start headhunting, but I do want him to start mixing it up. I’m hoping Kassian has a little Keith Tkachuk in him. Keith Tkachuk found himself spending a large chunk of his time in the penalty box, but he still managed to score 40 goals or more 4 times.

I think some grit and some scoring is just what the Sabres need right now.
