Lindy Ruff is ready for a spark and he is hoping the spark will come from a not-so-traditional area. According to WGR550, Ruff plans to place the shifty Tyler Ennis on a line with the Sabres’ veteran grinders: Grier and Niedermayer. Albeit, the 3rd line isn’t the typical area to look for more offense, but the Sabres need to breathe life into a comatose offense.
Placing a offensive minded forward on the third line draws attention away from the top 2 lines and forces defenses to pay more attention to a line that wouldn’t normally be considered a viable offensive threat. Now, I’m not saying that the 3rd line is going start producing goals in bunches, but it does create a diversion for the top lines.
There is no doubt that the Sabres are desparte for a spark. With the absence of the consistent Pominville, the disappearance of Thomas Vanek and the poor play of Tim Connolly, the Sabres need to find away to light the lamp somewhere else. The Sabres “top forwards” aren’t contributing, so until they do, Ruff is looking for his ancillary players to pick up the slack. Guys like Niedermayer and Grier need to start contributing themselves if this team wants to snap this slump.
The Sabres will be slinking into Atlanta with their heads down, but hopefully Lindy will have them ready to overcome their poor play and hopefully their offense will wake up.
