It’s tough to write about a team in the midst of a slump the way the Buffalo Sabres are on, especially when I want them to win. Maybe it’s time I took a tougher stance on them – and took off my fan blinders. I’m tired of being a frustrated fan – I want to be a fan of a team that wins – and I’m not trading cities just to accomplish that. So here is the days news, which boil down to injuries, excuses, and maybe some job security.
I’ll start with Lindy Ruff. Inducted into the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame last night. Kudo’s to him. It would have been a better night if we could have inducted him as the first Buffalo head coach to win a championship. Instead it’s his longevity that gets him in. It was pretty obvious from his speech that the team’s current slump has his mind in other places on a celebration night – and he wrapped it up by saying that this team is a playoff team, and we will make the playoffs. Boy, he might not be able to win a championship with this team, but if he ever turned politician in Buffalo – he would have my vote. The city of Buffalo had the wool pulled over their eyes again, with Lindy Ruff probably realizing that he could lose his job if the losing continues. Fair or not – thats what happened. But just like after “no goal” – the cities passion for falling in love with emotions on the sports teams will rule the day.
Ryan Miller is claiming to have felt the tightness in his knee since training camp. In the world of hidden sports injuries – don’t you think that is something that you might want to have addressed before the season – as opposed to getting off to this start? What happened to players showing up for training camp fit for duty? What did you do during the offseason that you weren’t ready to go? At this point it looks like an easy excuse for the Buffalo Sabres to write the season off because Ryan Miller was hurt. Oh, boy..I can’t hear it now in April when we miss the playoffs by one or two points. “Well if Miller was healthy we would have made the playoffs” I would have been able to stomach this horrid stretch of hockey if they had come out of the gate with Miller injured instead of trying to push through it and give us this crap now. Im headed to tonights game – and I would hate to see Jhonas Enroth hung out to dry again – or Patrick Lalime starting – knowing that the excuses are starting to pile up.
And to make excuses as to why you couldn’t squeek into the playoffs as the last place team (eighth place)? When’s the last time an eighth seed won the Stanley Cup? Never. The lowest seed to ever win the cup was the New Jersey Devils in the shortened season, they were the fifth place team.
