The Buffalo Sabres showed up for tonights game, and an unimpressive Tampa Bay Lightning stormed into town, and played Buffalo for a tie for most of the game.
The only reason the Tampa Bay Lighting scored on the game winner, is because goaltender Patrick Lalime forgot what color jersey he wore, or that the game was being played, or that the whistle hadn’t blown, or I don’t know what the hell he was thinking.
I have undergone a get rid of Tim Connolly campaign, that I almost stopped and replaced with a waive Patrick Lalime campaign, but I think I am going to run them concurrently. Nice guys or not, we need players who are going to contribute on the ice, and lazy, bone headed plays are getting us no where. I can’t remember when the last time Tim Connolly scored a goal worthy of a goal scorer. The only way he nets them now is when he is acting like a leech and has that easy tap in.
The Sabres have another long weekend off, as they don’t play again until Wednesday, when the Pittsburgh Penguins come into town. This is the second time this month the Sabres have a three day break between Saturday and Sunday games, and they actually close out the month on such a break as well. The first one was inexcusable, as both the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils sat and waited three days to play each other, Pittsburgh has a game on Monday night against the Florida Panthers.
It is a rare night that the Buffalo Sabres lose a hockey game when Thomas Vanek scored, and score he did. Seconds after being laid out on the ice in his own end, he picks the puck up and lasers a shot past Lightning goalie Mike Smith, unassisted.
The Buffalo Sabres were able to keep Steven Stamkos off the score sheet as far as goals were concerned, so he now has 19 goals in 20 games. He has 30 games remaining to score 31 goals in an effort to be the first person since Brett Hull to score 50 in 50.
