It’s not so much the story that Ryan Miller will not be playing in goal tonight for the Buffalo Sabres against another one of the hottest teams in the NHL, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
What I am eager to see is if Lindy Ruff will start backup Patrick Lalime or Portland Pirates starting goaltender Jhonas Enroth. If the kid from Portland gets the nod, I think its time to think about keeping him with the parent club, in favor of waiving Patrick Lalime to Portland.
This actually benefits the Sabres in more ways than one. First off, it gives them a more solid backup, and gives Enroth the chance to learn the NHL game. His time has come, he has weathered the AHL long enough.
If the Buffalo Sabres are going to make a roster move, having Enroth on the parent roster as opposed to Lalime gives them more cap space. They will still have to pay Lalime his salary, but it won’t count against the NHL cap.
Who knows, maybe the Sabres will get lucky and someone will claim if off waivers. Its never pretty to break ties with a player that has been loyal to your organization despite the fire storm of negativity that surrounded your play, but it is time for the Buffalo Sabres to move on from Patrick Lalime.
Either way, whichever goaltender dons the pads and skates out to start tonight’s game will have his hands full, as Steven Stamkos is just about half way to scoring 50 in 50 – a measure that has not been done since Brett Hull in 1991-1992, and only includes the likes of some serious Hall of Famers. As I writer this, I realize what time it is, and thought I had some more time but Lalime is starting, which If my name is Steven Stamkos – I am thinking about another hat trick, and one step closer to Hall of Fame enshrinement.
