New Ownership Brewing?

I went to bad last night, with visions of a new captain last night after reading Dave Vogan’s post, and I thought, yes – a new captain would mean a new voice and a new direction.  I woke up this morning to hey, there might be a new owner to the Buffalo Sabres soon.

Now, before we continue – its all hearsay and rumors at this point, but hell yeah I like this idea.

The Buffalo Sabres ownership has gone through several layers, the Knox brothers brought the NHL to Buffalo – but how committed were they to winning.  They were great philantrophists – but the idea of owning a hockey franchise was more for the glamour of the business than winning a hockey championship.  That might have come along later – but was not the fuel to the fire.

Then came the Rigas – and they ran it like a business, and ran it straight into the ground.  It was all about the money for them, and the product on the ice suffered because of it.  Bankruptcy loomed, and the perfect business opportunity presented itself for Tom Golisano.  Tom didn’t flip the house, he flipped the team.  He brought the team out of the red, and now present a sound business model with sometimes competitive nature.

And then there was Terry Pegula.  He has ties to the area, he loves hockey, and he donated $88 million dollars to Penn State to not only kick start their Division One hockey program, but to build a dynasty.  In the words of the guys over at WGR550 – its almost like we created the best possible owner in a lab and gave him to the Sabres.

While the team has not said anything regarding the move, because it is company policy not to talk about it, rumors have surfaced that a letter of intent to purchase the team has been signed – nothing but hearsay according to Larry Quinn.  It will be interesting to follow this story as it develops – and we shall see where it ends up.  At this point right now, I don’t see a downside to having Pegula as an owner.
