The Buffalo Sabres travel to Long Island tonight for a contest against the lowly New York Islanders. While the New York Islanders do not pose an immediate threat to the Buffalo Sabres playoff picture in terms of taking one of the top eight spots – they do stand in the way of two points tonight. At this point in the season, the Islanders are merely battling the New Jersey Devils and the Edmonton Oilers for the best odds in the draft lottery.
With a few teams in the mix for the last place in the league, were going to honor the last place team in the league with the Bombay Golden Stick Award, presented by the man, the myth, and the legion himself, Emilio Estevez:
The Buffalo Sabres are playing desperate hockey, and the leader emeritus honors for this season (if we could hand it out now) would definitely go out to Cody McCormick – who has a good chance of earning a point in three straight games for just the third time in his career.
Despite being towards the bottom of the league in the standings, the New York Islanders are 5-4-1 in their last ten, not to far off the Sabres last ten game record of 6-3-1. The Buffalo Sabres are heading into the game after a win, the Islanders, a loss.
Don’t be surprised if Ryan Miller starts in his 21st straight contest of the season. Given the number of starts already, I don’t think it is too hard to fathom that the Sabres starting goaltender will hit thirty wins, it is doubtful that he will hit the 40 plus category. At this point, if your going to sit Ryan Miller for a contest, I would rather call up Jhonas Enroth for the NHL experience, as opposed to giving the opponent the win by putting Patrick Lalime in. Keeping Lalime around just because he is friends with Ryan Miller is just not a good hockey decision. I want my goaltenders to challenge each other so that they both play well – not have a backup that is an embarrassment on the ice, but he enjoys a beer out with Ryan Miller after the game.
