The first dominoe falls in the Pegula era, and the Buffalo Sabres have placed Captain Craig Rivet on waivers. All I can say is about time. The Sabres have been dragging their feet on this move all year, it comes as a shock that this team didn’t do it earlier.
Actually, given the mentality of the previous ownership, I can see not wanting to embarass the C out of Craig Rivet. New ownership, new direction.
The only question now stands who do you put the C on for the remainder of the year, if at all. You have not had someone other than a press box junkie leading this team, so I don’t think you need to annoint a current Sabre in a haste just to end the season with someone on the roster bearing the weight of the captaincy.
The only way I see giving someone the captaincy right now is if you are going to give it to them and keep it there for several seasons. I think putting that responsibility on someone this year would do nothing more than rock a ship that is bairly holding water.
We as fans don’t know what the Pegula Three Year plan is, so to sit and speculate what the next move might be, (move Tim Connolly) is fruitless. It opens up cap space – and it puts Craig to pasture. He’s respected of course, but his era in Buffalo was over before this year started. Given the fact that he reported at the beginning of the year that this was his last hurrah, someone is going to claim him on waivers for depth. I don’t think you will see Craig Rivet resigning a contract to play through next year, unless he has a case of the Brett Favres.
Who would you annoint the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres? I seriously think that the outside the box approach should be made, and someone be brought in with a veteran status that has won the Stanley Cup or at least been there more than once – someone that has been on the line and been on a system that has repeatedly won.
Keep the captain vacant. The assistant captains on this team have been doing the job all along – no sense in naming a captain for naming one sake.
