The Buffalo Sabres took the ice tonight short one member of the family. Rick Martin, a member of the famed French Connection past away today of an apparent heart attack. In a fitting tribute, the team skated to center ice and lifted their sticks in honor of the late great Buffalo Sabre. He will be sorely missed.
The Buffalo Sabres wasted little time getting in the win column. I was unable to watch the game with my new work schedule, but I got in the car to hear Ottawa score the final marker of the game – as the Sabres were willing to allow time to expire as fast as possible in order to remain tied for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Nathan Gerbe and Tyler Ennis continue to prove their worth to the team, as well as Thomas Vanek continuing to drive the numbers up on his worth in the line of being a future captain of this team. I am getting to the point that this is Thomas Vanek’s team, regardless of who they bring in during the free agency period come July 1st.
It is not going to be easy, but I have a feeling that if this team keeps playing this way, it is not going to be much of a surprise if we surprise a team or two in the playoffs this year. I won’t be upset with a competitive first round exit – as we are technically in a “rebuilding” phase with new ownership – but I would be lying to tell you I would not want to win a few games in the second season.
