The Buffalo Sabres have a date with destiny that start this Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers. Thursday starts the second season for the Buffalo Sabres, where they have earned the right to play for the Stanley Cup. Quite an honor considering the Buffalo Sabres played the first three months of the season like they were ready to challenge the Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, and Florida Panthers for the top draft pick.
Just like that something clicked, and the Buffalo Sabres turned into a nearly unstoppable hockey machine. Yes, the playoffs are a different type of hockey, that we have yet to see this group of players become successul – no team in the Eastern Conference scares me right now.
It’s not because I think we are an unstoppable force that is going to race to win the Stanley Cup this year – although I would not put it past the realms of possibility. No team scares me because there are no expectations on this team. If we lose in the first round of the playoffs to Philadelphia, then we look to July 1st to see how Terry Pegula and his new management team will reshape this team and how fast they can turn them into champions. If we continue to win, then its just a wild and fun ride that keeps hockey in down town Buffalo.
We didn’t back into the playoffs this year. We didn’t need a last minute shootout victory, or have to watch another team lose in order to hold a spot in the best dance in sports – the Buffalo Sabres took fate by the horns and didn’t let go until fate tapped out, and destiny played our cards. The initial draw is Philadelphia. Lets see how the Buffalo Sabres can play their cards.
Keep checking back in this week as you will see some regular season reviews, and some interaction with writers from Philadelphia, as we get ready for what it going to be one hell of a series.
