Take a look up and down the Buffalo Sabres roster. Sure the guys have played in pressure situations before, but only one has done the thing that every hockey player around the world would love to do, and that is lift the Stanley Cup. It will be Rob Niedermayer’s responsibility this off season to keep the young guys on this club in the right mindset, as the Buffalo Sabres are set to start off against the Philadelphia Flyers tonight.
The Buffalo Sabres enter the playoffs one of the hottest teams in the NHL, with a finish of 16-4-4 record that put them comfortably into the seventh seed of the playoffs, despite a very rocky start to this NHL season. Their opponent on the other hand, has not played to their potential down the final stretch of the season – and are relying on the fact that they think their players can flip the switch and return to a winning fashion in time to take this series.
All it is going to take for the Buffalo Sabres to wrap this series up is keep the Flyers away from that switch.
The Flyers have a lot of talent, but they have their weaknesses as well. If the Sabres can overcome the size factor – and get plenty of shots on their goaltender – this series will be over before it starts. Keeping Philly down is the most important factor.
I have got Buffalo taking this series in seven games, so a loss tonight won’t have me reaching for the panic button. Not the way this team has responded to losses lately.
The playoffs have returned to Buffalo – here’s to them sticking around for awhile.
