Stafford Signs 4 Year, $16 Million Deal

The Buffalo Sabres have agreed to terms with forward Drew Stafford, on a multi-year contract, he was set to become a Restricted Free Agent on July 1.

The deal is reported to be 4 years, $16 Milion.

Stafford, 25, scored a career high 31 goals and 52 points last season.

I understand that some may feel that the price is alittle high for Stafford, i also did at first. But, if you think about it, it really is not that bad.

WGR’s Paul Hamilton pointed out that Stafford’s 4 million a year could be compared to New York Islanders’ Matt Mouson.

Moulson, who is two years older then Stafford, recently signed for 3 years at $3.13-million per season.  But if you look at players who scored 30 goals  this year(List of players is below), the contract dosent seem to be that bad.

Milan Lucic, $4.1-million. Ilya Kovalchuk, $6.7-million. David Backes, $4.5-million. Thomas Vanek, $7.1-million. Phil Kessel, $5.4-million. Nikolai Kulemin, $2.4-million. Rick Nash, $7.8-million. Jonathan Toews, $6.3-million. Alex Ovechkin, $9.5-million. All these players had between 30 and 32 goals this year.

Now the Sabres move on to other potential restricted free agents,  forward Nathan Gerbe, defensemen Andrej Sekera, Chris Butler, Mike Weber, Marc-Andre Gragnani and goaltender Jhonas Enroth.

OMG (wish I were kidding but I’m not), you are suggesting that because Stafford scored thirty goals that his contract can be compared to the larger contracts given to: Lucic, Kessel, Toevs, Nash, and Ovechkin, even Vanek?

You are being sarcastic, right? I guess we should be offering trades to their respective teams since they are obviously sooo over-paying these players. Then they could stock their teams with ……… um, I don’t know, I don’t know any of their names. Why is that?

I am simply saying that Stafford’s contract really is not that high.. Also, as others have pointed out and shame on me for not mentioning, Stafford would have made a lot more in arbitration. The list of 30 goals was just a comparison that Paul Hamilton used and i linked to his article because i pretty much agree with him.
