Silence is Deafening

The Buffalo Sabres have announced that Perssons and Turnbill have signed one year deals with the team.  Great news for the city of Rochester.

Ever since making a splash during free agency by bringing in Erhoff, Regher, and Leino, news out of Sabres Nation has ground to a screeching halt.  Have we lost focus on bringing Hockey Heaven to life?  There are many pieces of the puzzle missing, and the Sabres will not contend for the Stanley Cup until those issues are address.

Backup Goaltender

Has the Enroth era ended in Buffalo before it has properly started?  The last report we have seen from this camp is that the rookie goaltender was looking for a slight raise from the team to play in the show – and wasn’t really happy with the qualifying offer the Sabres tendered.  While the Buffalo Sabres have plenty of time to get the deal done before the start of the season, they might not want to wait too long.  It might not be in Jhonas Enroth’s best interest to hold out over 250-275,000 dollars this early in his career, but in ten games for the big club he did more winning than Patrick Lalime did in multiple years.  Give the kid his raise and get him under contract.  The longer you wait, the more dissention that grows, and the likely hood that you could end up with another Lalime like situation in goal for next year.

Sekera set for Arbitration

Why is a deal not done yet for the young promising defensemen?  Are the Sabres not concerned about bringing this guy into the fold?  Arbitration has not gone well for this team, and the longer the team waits on getting a deal signed, the more likely the chances that this contract ends up in front of a judge.  While the Buffalo Sabres are deep, Sekera proved at the Olympics that he can be a top defensemen.  Get the deal done so you can reap the benefits – and not let someone else end up with him on the blue line.

Numero Uno

Are we headed into a season with a roster topped off with Ville Leino and Derek Roy?  I know the free agency class was weak this year, but the Buffalo Sabres need that clutch player.  Remember those goals that came in the final seconds of games?  I hate to bring up names, but Danny Briere and Chris Drury.  There is not a player on this team that I would want on the ice in the final minutes of a critical game leading the charge.  The Buffalo Sabres need to find a gem to stick on their top line.  Derek Roy and Ville Leino are not the answer for the number one guy.

I can’t say just yet that I am dissapointed in this off season.  The goal was to get better.  The goal was achieved.  The goal was to bring in a number one center.  We are lacking in that department.  The dog days of summer are here, and I expect that fans are going to start to get anxious over the lack of deals.  The honeymoon is over.  The magic of the Erhoff, Regher, Leino signings has faded.  Darcy has to have another trick up his sleeve – or the season may start out with a headache.
