With September finally approaching, and hockey season around the corner, many scribes are fine tuning their keyboards and getting ready for some serious hockey talk. The Buffalo Sabres, for the first time in a helluva long time, are front and center when it comes to banter around the NHL.
Lately, much of the talk has been predictions, forecasts, hopes and dreams. But, there is still some business to be done down at 1 Seymour H. Knox III Plaza. The Sabres have to comply with the rules of the salary cap, and shed about $3.5 million.
There is much debate amongst hockey fans everywhere how they are going to accomplish this, whether it’s to trade a few guys for prospects and/or picks, or bury a couple salaries in the AHL. Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News recently had a very interesting article that I thought I’d share with everyone.

I have bled blue and gold for what is the start of my fourth decade now, and haven't missed a Sabres game in person or on TV in 15 years. Thanks to my Father (who for years worked as a statistician at many of the Sabres home games), and my two uncles (who played the game for years and years), I had the privilege of growing up around this ridiculously amazing sport. My great Uncle Lee even gave the French connection their nickname.
I have seen some amazing things at the arenas in downtown Buffalo. From Wayne Gretzky's record-breaking 77th goal in 1982, to Derek Plante's game seven overtime winning goal, sending the hated Ottawa Senators to the golf course.
Gil Perreault's breathtaking rushes, Mike Foligno's signature jump, the dynamic duo of LaFontaine & Alexander the Great, the Dominator, and those great teams with Dru and Briere...the list goes on.
I have a passion for ice hockey, and in particular the Buffalo Sabres, like no other (glad my wife shares that passion). I desperately want to see a Stanley Cup champion in Buffalo, and my writing style will reflect that passion. Here's hoping my enthusiasm shines through, and if I offend anyone along the way, well, blame it on Darcy!!!
