Daily Dasherboard: September 21st

Pucks are being dropped all over as teams prepare for the NHL 2011-2012 season.  Just a few things happening around the league.  Follow the jump for some juicy stories both hockey and non hockey related happening on the internet today.

RJ Umberger gives the Columbus Blue Jackets franchise his personal vote of confidence by signing a five year deal to stay in Ohio (who wants to stay in Ohio?)  Columbus probably overpaid to keep him, but for what its worth, it might be a match made in Ohio.  Check out the full story here.  Best comment so far on the thread, how about a Weekend at Bernies comment:

Not sure how they’ve managed to get his corpse on the ice over the last few years since he was brutally murdered by Brian Campbell, I’ve been assuming it was some sort of Weekend At Bernie’s deal this whole time.

What do Meth and Kindergarten have in common?  Nothing unless you live in Missouri, where a small town Kindergarten class was almost introduced to Meth during show and tell.  Were not talking about the Blue Jackets Marc Methot either – were talking the real deal.  Thankfully an alert teacher caught the drugs and the paraphenalia before it hit the classroom.  Could have made for a very interesting learning experience.

Ok, its only preseason but the Winnipeg Jets first win back in Winnipeg was worthy of the standing ovation the team got for their return to the ice.

Nobody likes when the NHL makes changes to the game that we love, but would you really hate the idea of shallower nets to make the ice surface bigger without altering the seating at arenas?  Ok, the ice surface wouldb’t be overly that much larger, but more room to operate has to be better for offense?  And the verification line in the net?  Hell why not.  The league has some time before it can use the “smaller” nets, as they only own two and the competition committee has to approve them still – but why wait to long on something good?  I think its fitting that they tested them during a preseason game in Toronto.  Don’t think it gave the Leafs much of an advantage though, letting the Maple Leafs shoot on a net with a larger opening is their only hope of being better in the league.

The season is almost here.   Are you ready?  Have you taken on any new superstitions to help your team with this year?  Have you started your game plan routine yet?  As fast as life has been going lately, we will be talking playoff beards before you know it.
