The Buffalo Sabres kick off the European leg of their tour this year today in the final pres season matchup. They will take on Addler Mannheim of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL – German Hockey League). Game time is set for 730PM local time, which means no one in Buffalo is getting any work done, as computer feeds, and radios will be tuned in to hear updates on the game. This is the final pre season game for the Buffalo Sabres. After today’s contest they travel to Helsinki Finland to face the Anaheim Ducks.
While Jochen Hecht remains sidelined because of post concussion syndrome – there are some guys on the Mannheim Roster that might be looking forward to seeing an NHL sweater once again.
What names on the back of Mannheim sweaters might you remember?
Fred Brathwaite – G – He never played in many NHL games, learning the game as an undrafted free agent with Edmonton; spending more time with the American Hockey League than the big clubs. Was name DEL MVP in 2009.
Shawn Belle – D – his NHL time totalled a whopping 20 games. A former first round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues, he has more NHL trades under his belt than he does NHL goals. After stops in Minnesota, Montreal, Edmonton, and Colorado, the young defensemen turned his eyes toward the DEL.
Mike Blumac – RW – another product out of the St. Louis Blues system. Glumac signed undrafted with the Blues in 2004. He played 33 games in the 05-06 season before being buried in the NHL. Todays game will be exciting for him, as his hometown is Niagara Falls, Ontario.
