Lindy Ruff has finally made the captaincy for the Buffalo Sabres 2011-2012 season known. And it’s not who I would have picked – by a long shot.
I would have entertained thoughts of Derek Roy, Thomas Vanek, Robyn Regehr, Paul Gaustad. Guys on the team that have played a role in leading this team. Lindy Ruff decided not to go with a natural leader of the team, and select Jason Pominville as the point man for the franchise – not on my radar for possible captains, but an obvious choice for the team.
Pominville has been on the team for several seasons now – in fact he was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 2001. Pominville is a workhorse for the Buffalo Sabres, having dressed for every game since making the roster full time, minus his injury time last year, having missed only 9 regular season games since joining the team full time in 2006-2007.
The Buffalo Sabres start the 2011-2012 season tomorrow afternoon, taking on the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks in Helsinki, Finland as part of the NHLs European Premiere Series.
