Trade Deadline Story Lines: Jeff Carter

The NHL Trade Deadline is inching closer, and for myself it is one of the most exciting days of the year. Its the time of year teams add pieces in hope of a playoff run or other teams start blowing up their teams. This year is no exception, there are some teams that are lower down in the standings with some talent that could be shipped elsewhere. Today starts a new series leading us up to the 2012 NHL Trade Deadline, Trade Deadline Story Lines.

We start in Columbus, where the Blue Jackets sit last in the league with 36 points. For a team that made some free agency moves and trades this off-season,  being last is an incredible disappointment. Some of those moves were signing Vaclav Prospal and James Wisneniewski, as well as trading for the focus of today’s article. The Blue Jackets traded the rights to Jakub Voracek for Jeff Carter after the Flyers became strapped for cap room with the Ilya Bryzgalov signing.

When Carter was sent to Columbus, it appeared that they Blue Jackets had finally gotten that center to play with their superstar Rick Nash. He started the season injured, and has only put up 12 goals and 7 assists in 33 games. It isn’t just because the Blue Jackets are struggling as a team, because Nash is on pace to score about as many points as he did last season.

People in Columbus believe there are very few untouchables going into this trade deadline. Although it appears evident Carter is on the trading block, even Rick Nash has been brought up when it comes to Blue Jackets trades. They should be one of the major sellers when it comes that time as this team will most likely be blown up. However Carter’s contract may be one that is difficult to move. He is signed through 2021-22 at a $5,272,000 cap hit. Recently CBC reported that around the league Carter’s reputation has taken a hit. Many “suitors” have backed off the idea of getting Carter on their team.  That being said he is a center, and almost every team in the NHL needs a number one center or at least another center. He could end up being very sought after for that reason alone.

As we get closer to the trade deadline, more and more rumors shall be circling around the league. Keep checking back to Sabre Noise for the latest Trade Deadline Story Lines. Thanks for reading!
