Knee-Jerk Reactions: Buffalo Sabres vs. Ottawa Senators

Marc DesRosiers-US PRESSWIRE

By any stretch of the means, the Buffalo Sabres should try to avoid three point games when the teams they are trailing in the standings are the teams you are playing in the games.

When a team like the Ottawa Senators has you by a goal three different times during the game, you give them the point and then scratch out a win in the shootout.  Eighth place everyone, welcome to eighth place.  Or at least the threeway tie for eightplace.

Here are a couple of reactions from tonights game that left me going, whaaattttt?  Or scratching my head.

Why does Brad Boyes get the nod in the shootout?  What has be done this season to deserve or merit the chance to win games for this team?  And the fact that he doesn’t even get a shot off against Bishop.

Sabres lose Kaleta and Ellis during the game to injuries.  I didn’t see the play where Ellis got hurt, but it was a collision in front of the net, it took him a long time to get off the ice.

Where has this Ville Leino been all year?  You couldn’t seperate him from the puck, and when he didn’t have the puck, he knew right where to be.  All around quality effort from Leino.

Having Marcus Foligno standing in the wings to take over when Zach Kassian is no longer here sounds like a great plan, but its only one game.  If the kid can keep playing at this level, he will make a great addition to this team.  The way he sold out at the end of the game to keep the tie was the epitomy of what these team needs to be doing right now.

The Buffalo Sabres need to take note of two of the goals scored by the Ottawa Senators tonight.  They were lucky bounces that found their way to the back of the net.  Karlsson pulls off goals 17 and 18 by throwing the puck to the net, not trying to be pretty.

Ryan Miller is playing like Ryan Miller needs to be playing.  If the Sabres can sneak into the playoffs, they might be able to surprise the New York Rangers.  The last games against the Rangers have been close, so there is no reason to think that the Sabres can’t hang if they make it.  They took the Flyers to seven games last year, and didn’t belong in the playoffs then either.

It was interesting that the refs awarded the double minor towards the end of overtime.  I get that Karlsson wasn’t happy about the obvious penalty he just took, but it gave the Buffalo Sabres no additional advantage.  Other than adding it to the guys career penalty stats – it served no purpose.   What about extending overtime?  Not a long time, but if a team takes a penalty late in the OT period, you could extend overtime until the penalty ends.  Simple enough addition to the rule book, and it won’t happen all the time, so it won’t be like it will occur all that often.

Why is Chris Neil still in this league?
