We round up the last of Free Agent Friday this week, with Rochester Americans captain Colin Stuart. Stuart, 29, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Colin Stuart | Left Wing | 29 years old | 2011-12 Salary: $525,000
Stuart has been a member of the Sabres organization since August 2010, when he signed as a free agent with the team. He was assigned to the AHL’s Portland Pirates the following season and played 72 games with the team.
In that season, he had 16 goals and 28 assists – his highest point season in his career. In addition, he spent three games with the Buffalo Sabres that year.
This past year, he became a member of the Rochester Americans and captained the team through the first round of the playoffs. In 51 games with the AHL team, Stuart had 13 goals and 19 assists. He also earned another call-up to the Sabres and played two games.
Perhaps one of Stuart’s most valuable qualities is his plentiful experience. Although he’s only played 56 NHL games over eight seasons since he began his pro career, the left winger has a stack of AHL experience on his resume.
A 2001 NHL draft pick, he played four years of college hockey in Colorado before joining the Chicago Wolves for his first AHL season. Since then, he’s played with the Chicago Wolves, Abbotsford Heat, Portland Pirates and now, the Rochester Americans.
As free agency approaches, will the Sabres re-sign the Rochester captain?
If not, the question bears answering: who would be captain of the Amerks team next year?
