Buffalo Sabres fans for the last five to ten years have always had to deal with the “core” players on this team. Love them or hate them everyone knew they were here to stay. No matter if we were on our way to the playoffs or just finishing out the season, Darcy always seemed to stick up for his core guys. He always had this relationship with certain players and you knew nothing was going to change. That all changed two seasons ago, and since then, Darcy and the front office haven’t looked back.
First was not re-signing Tim Connolly. Connolly I believe could have had a great future with this team but had too many obstacles he couldn’t overcome. Injuries first and foremost totally killed his chances of being that complete player. The Maple Leafs was the team who later signed him after the Sabres passed.
Next was the trade of Paul Gaustad. Talks started circulating that he could possibly be dealt at the trade deadline this season but he wasn’t going to be cheap. The Sabres were looking for a 1st round draft pick and many thought Buffalo was crazy. I have to admit I was thinking the same but then came along the Predators. Before you knew it Paul was shipping out and the Sabres had their 1st rounder. Most people will always remember Gaustad in that he didn’t step up and help his goalie with the whole Miller / Lucic incident.
Last and most recent was the trade of Derek Roy. Derek, along with the rest of the core players had spent a lot of time here but for him a change in scenery was vital. Fans grew frustrated on the lack heart he put into some games last season and also with his stubborn attitude. Roy and Lindy I believe didn’t see eye to eye at all and it showed. The Sabres ended up acquiring Steve Ott and Adam Pardy in the deal. This deal will work out for Buffalo nicely because of the sudden change in the identity of their team.
With that said I think the Sabres will move one more player that they consider a “core” player. The question is who will it be? With Darcy wheeling and dealing it could be anyone.
