Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today that the Buffalo Sabres have signed another player.
While it is not the number one center, nor one of the restricted free agents the Buffalo Sabres have still yet to sign – it is one of their defensive prospects – keeping the depth in the organization and giving Darcy the ability to ante up more for a possible trade with prospects waiting in the wings.
Today’s signing keeps defenseman Drew Schiestel in the organization for one more season – on a two way contract. Schiestel was a second round draft pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2007 entry draft (59th overall). He has played the last three seasons in the AHL, appearing in just 59 contests next year. Seeing Schiestel in a Buffalo Sabres uniform beyond training camp exhibition games this year though means that the blue line has been worn really thin – and their are more regulars in the press box than we want to think about.
It is nice to know that Darcy has the depth if he does manage to swing a deal – that he has some veteran prospects that can fill in in a blue and gold time of need.
