Buffalo Sabres Missing Stand Up Toughness

For a while now, and its no secret, I have had an utter disdain for former Buffalo Sabres forward Derek Roy.  That disdain has not waned at all, I just don’t have to care about him anymore because he is a member of the Dallas Stars.

His lazy, uninspired play, the diving, the locker room problems – just seemed to add up enough that I was overjoyed to see his almost point per game production leave town.  Perusing through YouTube after work today brought me across a video that starts typical Derek Roy, but ends with something the Buffalo Sabres have been missing for some time now, and the answer, at least in this video is Steve Bernier.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am in now way condoning or thinking about bringing Steve Bernier back to the Buffalo Sabres.   What I am talking about is that type of player and that type of “fight” that has been missing in this team.  Steve Ott is a step in the right direction, maybe the same can be said about John Scott – but that is just one player on a team of 20 – he is not going to be on the ice for every occasion that will warrant that type of play.

Sure, its an old video, but notice during the scrum there is only one guy that actually drops his gloves? Watch the guys in blue and gold as they skate towards the wannabe melee – they are almost skating into it hoping someone wearing a striped sweater would get between them, or someone else would get in to do the dirty work.

There mere presence of Ott on the team should spur on guys like Kaleta who are capable of fighting, knowing that there is help on the bench now, but Darcy and company if they think they are going to put together a team to challenge in the playoffs, are going to have to do some serious remodeling of the lineup to withstand the rigors of the playoffs.
