Last night, the AAPG kicked off without a hitch. Two teams, coached by Buffalo Sabres’ legends Phil Housley and 1980’s Olympic Gold Medal Winner Rob McClanahan, battled to showcase their skills in front of a crowd of 5,591 hockey fans and NHL scouts. All looking to up their draft stock come June 2013.
Forward Ryan Fitzgerald collected three assists to be named the game’s MVP. Team McClanahan received goals from five different players: Seth Jones, Dakota Mermis, Hudson Fasching, Jacob Montgomery and Quentin Shore. Defensemen Mermis and Gage Ausmus were both a game-high plus-four. Evan Allen scored twice in the third to record both goals for Team Housley.
Local products Sean Malone and Matt Lane garnered the largest cheering sections and played well. Malone was vacant from the score sheet but registered several scoring chances and Lane added an assist on Team McClanahan’s fifth goal of the night.
A pair of youth hockey games preceded the main event during the afternoon, and both ended in shutouts. The Buffalo Saints 18U opened the day with a 6-0 win over the Amherst Knights 18U. In the second game, Nathan Susese scored the only goal as the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 18U blanked the Boston Jr. Bruins 1-0.
