NHL Set To Give Two Weeks Notice

Tom Szczerbowski-US PRESSWIRE

Tick Tock Tick Tock.  If you have ever seen Walt Disney’s rendition of Peter Pan – the ticking tock was the most (and only) fear of Captain Hook – the head of the pirates that tortured Peter Pan and the lost boys.Hockey fans across North America are hearing the same death toll for the game that gives them a release from everyday life.

Despite meeting over the weekend with the NHLPA – it appears that the NHL is getting ready to cancel the first two weeks of the regular season.  With no deal in place between the feuding sides, such an announcement will probably be made this week.

Nixing the first two weeks of the NHL regular season pretty much puts the month of October in jeopardy.  Look for the NHL to announce cancellations – at least at first – in similar two week increments so long as negotiations are on going.

Getting the major players into the same room for negotiations by making small talk has been important.  The last lockout claimed an entire season because NHLPA head man Bob Goodenow and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman couldn’t stand one another and wouldn’t meet to save their lives.

Donald Fehr looks to usher in a new era of professional hockey for the players associated with the union.  Is he the right man for the job though?  You have to wonder what special interests he has going into these meetings that are part of a personal agenda as opposed to in the best interest of the players.  Fehr was the head of the MLB players union when they had their work stoppage in 1994 (players strike) and that remains the only year in baseball’s history that a champion wasn’t crowned since the 1904.
