With the news today that Dominik Hasek is retiring……………..again, at the age of 47, it seems time to re-raise the question of his jersey number. I believe the Sabres should add #39 to the rafters along side Buffalo’s all time greats. Hasek was the best goalie to ever play for the Buffalo Sabres and I believe no one can debate that. Dominik Hasek, in nine seasons with the Sabres, became arguably the best goaltender in the League, winning the Vezina five times in a six-season span from 1993-99. He also is the only goalie to win back-to-back League MVPs, in 1996-97 and 1997-98. He also won the Ted Lindsay Award in both of those seasons. Hasek finished his NHL career 11th all-time with 389 wins and tied for sixth with 81 shutouts. He also had a 2.20 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage in 735 games. He was a six-time member of the NHL First All-Star Team and skated in six All-Star Games.
I would like to see Hasek honored for what he has accomplished in the Queen City of the Lake by having a banner raised with his name. He has done more than enough to earn a spot beside Horton #2, Martin #7, Perrault #11, Robert # 14, LaFontaine #16, and Gare #18. The next thing we should see is a Hasek #39 blue and gold banner dangling from the rafters.
