Oh late night games, how I hate thee. Tonight the Rochester Americans take on the Abbotsford Heat in a 10PM EST matchup. This is the first game of the 2013 calendar year for the Amerks, and they are hoping to start this year like they finished the last, winning.
So far the season series has been split between these two teams, both coming off one goal decisions, which is good for the Rochester Americans as the Heat are one of the top teams in the AHL. The Heat are on a skid though, and are hoping their season long homestand which includes two games against the Red, White, and Blue will help them mend their ways. To end the season, the team won just once in a six game stretch, and earning a measely three points out of a possible twelve. This dropped them from first to fifth in the conference, and they have some incentive to get back on the winning path as well.
There is no rest for either team, as they will face again in Abbotsford on Saturday night.
Offense continues to help the Rochester Americans in the standings, they stand at 105 goals, which is good for fifth in the American Hockey League, and is only 10 shy of Syracuse who sits at the top.
T.J. Brennan had a very Merry Christmas, putting up five points on the score sheet on Boxing Day, which put him in the team lead for scoring, jumping over Marcus Foligno. Brennan is just a few goals shy of the 40 year old mark set by Rick Pagnutti for goals by a defensemen in an Amerks uniform.
The Rochester Americans finished 2012 with a 16-12-3 record, good for tenth in the conference, and will need to continue their winning ways if they hope to grace the Calder Cup playoffs with their presence.
