For those that are still wondering what is happening on the Rochester campus of Sabres University, this afternoon the Rochester Americans host the Hamilton Bulldogs in an afternoon affair.
The Amerks are hoping to have a high energy younger crowd – taking advantage of the schools being closed for Martin Luther King Day.
With a couple days off since their last win, the Amerks have dropped to eighth in the standings, but have a chance to climb back higher by playing the place Bulldogs in the afternoon affair. Through 39 games have only one 1/3 of their games, and sit at the bottom of the American Hockey League.
For the Amerks, scoring is the key to success. Only five teams have scored more goals than the Rochester based Buffalo Sabres affiliate, but only eleven teams have allowed more goals than the Americans.
As much as I like David Leggio – being the home town kid and holding his own most nights – he needs to be more of a stop gap in the net and keep the Amerks from getting too far behind in games.
It’s not all his fault – fifteen of the Rochester Americans (thirteen if you take out T.J. Brennan and Cody Hodgson) all have a negative rating. Mark Mancari is worst in this category with a -9.
His goals against are only slightly worse than Ryan Millers, and his save percentage from last year is only a hair worse. I know that is like comparing apples to oranges giving the talent level difference between the two leagues, so maybe it’s better to point out that the Buffalo Sabres need a better goalie.
