For the second time this week, the Buffalo Sabres are gearing up for a set of back-to-back games. This time, the Sabres get to play a home-and-home series against the struggling Carolina Hurricanes.
The Sabres head down to Carolina with a 2-0 record, while Carolina has dropped its first two games, having been outscored 9 goals to 2 over the course of those contests. So far, the uniting of Jordan Staal with his brother, Eric Staal, has not produced much in terms of offensive fireworks. Neither has Carolina’s acquisition of the talented, yet unpredictable, Alexander Semin. These two pick-ups were part of the reason why some pundits had Carolina in the top ten of their rankings before the season started ( see SI’s here ), but as of right now, the Hurricanes are showing us the value of a preseason: namely, the development of chemistry. Right now, they don’t have it.
The Buffalo Sabres, on the other hand, boast one of the most lethal lines in hockey right now: the scoring machine that is the unit of Jason Pominville-Thomas Vanek-Cody Hodgson. This trio has accounted for five of the seven goals the Sabres have tallied so far, and have combined for eight assists. Their chemistry is off the charts, so we can hope that this series against the Hurricanes continues to demonstrate there is some science to NHL hockey!
