Interim Head Coach Ron Rolston is trying to transform the Buffalo Sabres roster to the team he thinks can in in th NHL. Screw the fact that Mikhail Grigorenko has to earn his NHL ice time. The Buffalo Sabres bench boss with all of three games experience has told Darcy Regier that he needs another young forward called up from the farm.
Today the Buffalo Sabres announced that rookie Brian Flynn has been called to the parent organization. In 45 games with the Rochester Americans the young forward has 16 goals and 16 points.
I am not sure of what the thought process is here, but adding another rookie to the mix when this team needs veteran leadership reeks to high heaven.
If you can’t won’ get Grigorenko on the ice because he hasn’t earned his ice time after tearing up the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – then how is sticking Flynn in the lineup any different?
Injuries not withstanding, maybe the plan is to play the younger guys while the veterans sit in the press box and watch how the game is played. There is no secret that the scoring droughts of Drew Stafford, Jochen Hecht and company have earned them the right to sit one or to nights in the press box. Is there really time to play this round robin with your forwards in a season that is very quickly coming to a close?
Hopefully Mr. Rolston knows what he is doing, its bad enough watching this team cruise their way to loss after loss with veteran players – I don’t need to see the dreams of our prospects crushed at the same time.
