The Buffalo Sabres might just get a little bit of luck when they face the New Jersey Devils this afternoon. Hall of Fame destined goaltender Martin Brodeur will not be in the lineup tonight. He cannot be pulled off the IR until Monday at least.
In his absence, the New Jersey Devils have not been able to find that winning spirit.
The Buffalo Sabres need everything going in their favor to extend their winning streak to three, and make it the longest winning streak of the season so far, having reached two games in a row for just the third time this season, to date they have never been able to stretch it to three.
This will be interim head coach Ron Rolston’s fifth game behind the bench, and he currently sits at a 2-2 record, the wins compliments of a 2-0 road trip through the state of Florida this week.
A win today would put him above .500 career in the NHL. History does not bode well for the Buffalo Sabres, last season they faced the Devils four times, and the Devils walked away with a 3-0-1 record. Buffalo needs the victory not only on a morality level, but in the standings as well.
Nathan Gerbe‘s offensive spark was lit in Florida, the little winger getting two goals in the victory over the Florida Panthers. Helping them to victory lifted the Buffalo Sabres out of the cellar – but by a precarious two points. The Washington Capitals now hold that honor once again. The Buffalo Sabres are still only four points out of a playoff position.
Ryan Miller has been excellent as of late. Through the Florida trip he stopped 70 of 74 shots – but showed signs of tiring in the Florida game. Ryan Miller has started every Buffalo Sabres game since February 5th – almost a complete month now. The volume of shots have been large, as well as the amount of activity in those games, as the Sabres are tops in the league in shots allowed by the opponent.
The rumors are now started to swirl around the Buffalo Sabres with the call up of rookie Brian Flynn. Unrevealed injury…trade rumor? NHL scouts from around the league have bee drooling in Buffalo waiting for the flood gates to open on a team that will be reinventing itself. Is Flynn part of a trade or part of the future?
Today’s game is scheduled for 3PM, an afternoon matinee with the New Jersey Devils. Keep it tuned here for plenty of post game reactions from the staff here at Sabrenoise.
