Looking Forward…To A New Sabres Captain

As you all know, since trading away Jason Pominville at the trade deadline the Buffalo Sabres have been skating without a sweater bearing a “C” on it. In lieu of this, the Sabres have given Steve Ott an “A”, making him the third assistant captain along with Drew Stafford and Thomas Vanek.

Steve Ott has been one of the Sabres best players this year and has worked extremely hard to help this team out in pretty much every department, and deserves the right to wear that “A”. I have heard quite a bit of talk about making Ott the Captain next year, even though that seemed to die down since he called out the fans, and then proceeded to try to lick Jeff Halpern of the Canadians. In my opinion though I don’t think that it would be the right move to make him the Captain next year.

A new trend of young captains is spreading around the NHL, and I say the Sabres join that trend. I don’t know about you but if we are building for the future, I want a captain for the future. If you look at the Sabres captains for the last 10 years, the Sabres have had two stints of rotating captains, co-captency of Briere and Drury, I don’t really want to mention him but, Craig Rivet, and most recently Jason Pominville. Now take a look at the team everyone wants to hate but always seems to be doing something right, the Pittsburgh Penguins, they have had two captains in that same span of time, Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby. Granted the Sabres have had nowhere near that kind of talent on the roster, but I think it still says something about the Pittsburgh organization.

I won’t say the “R” word, but if the Sabres are building for the future, would it be smart to make one of the oldest players on the team a captain and have to go through this whole process again in 2-4 years or even add another stint of rotating captains? How much does Ott have left in the tank? Will he get resigned after next year? To many questions to be answered. I think the Sabres need one of the young guys to step up in the locker room and become a leader for the future. Ott is a great role player and I think an additional role he could play would be to help out a young captain in the locker room. My vote…??? I will save that for a later post.
