The Rochester Americans are hoping to make December 2013 a December to Remember for their fans. On top of their normal slate of games, and the recent announcement that the Buffalo Sabres American Hockey League franchise will host an Outdoor hockey event at Frontier Field, the Rochester Americans announced today that they have accepted an invitation to play in the Spengler Cup.
The Spengler Cup is the oldest invitational hockey tournament in the world, having been played every year since 1923. Only four years have been missed in the 90 years that the tournament has been held.
This will be the second time the Rochester Americans have participated in the invitation only tournament – making an appearance in the 1996 competition and finishing third. They are the only professional club from North America to ever play in the tournament.
The tournament will take place in Davos, Switzerland, permanent host city of the tournament from December 26-December 31st.
The Rochester Americans host the Outdoor event from December 13th to the 22nd, which features an American Hockey League outdoor game to start the event, several college outdoor games, high school games, and an alumni game featuring past players for the Rochester Americans and Buffalo Sabres, and a slew of other activities.
