While the Buffalo Sabres are focusing on winning to save hope of making it into the playoffs, the Rochester Americans will be doing battle with the Toronto Marlies. While their parent club needs every win it can muster to stay alive in the playoff race, the Rochester Americans hold their fate solely in their hands. They need only two points for, or two points away from the teams in their rear view mirror. They can get those two points easiest by defeating the Toronto Marlies, not an easy task.
Never fret though, as the Rochester Americans regular season comes to a close, they do it with a home and home series against the Hamilton Bulldogs, one of the worst teams in the American Hockey League this season. For Rochester though, they need to take it one game at a time, and start with the Marlies.
Rochester will have some help, as Luke Adam returns to the Red, White, and Blue – and one of the newest members of the Buffalo Sabres organization joins the team in Daniel Catenacci. With the Owen Sound out of the playoff picture, the Amerks were able to call him up to fill out a roster that has already over performed given the number of callups and losses to the Buffalo Sabres this season. Catenacci had 78 points in 67 games with the Owen Sound this year.
If the Rochester Americans are going to wrap up a playoff spot tonight, they are going to need all the help they can get. Rochester has been able to beat Toronto just one time this season.
Rochester can still surge as high as fourth place, just two points behind the Charlotte Checkers. And with a game in hand, they have plenty to play for against the Marlies. Therefore they are not looking at getting home ice advantage in the first round. If Rochester is to get a miracle along the same lines that would get the Buffalo Sabres into the playoffs, they could realistically catch the Marlies for first in the division as well. Game time is scheduled for 7:05.
After tonight’s contest, the Amerks will close out the season with a home and home with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
