Sabres in World Championships, Day Five

Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports

Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek and Rochester Americans forward Zemgus Girgensons faced each other in a preliminary match between Austria and Latvia today in the 2013 IIHF World Championships in Helsinki.

Vanek had one goal as Austria defeated Latvia by a score of 6-3. He won the one faceoff he took during the game, was a plus-1 and had three shots in 20:13 ice time. Only one player on the Austrian team, defenseman Thomas Pock, saw more ice time than Vanek in today’s game.

Girgensons was kept off the scoresheet, but was 55.56 percent on faceoffs, winning 10 of 18. He also had one shot but overall was a minus-2 in 17:13 ice time.

Only one Latvian player had a better faceoff percentage in the game than Girgensons – forward Andris Dzerins, who took just one faceoff during the game.

Austria will look to put up consecutive wins as they face Germany May 8 in the team’s fourth game of the tournament. The winless Latvian team will search for its first victory of the 2013 IIHF World Championships on May 9 when they face Slovakia.
