Vanek Scores to Lead Austria to Victory

Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek scored the game-winning goal today as Austria defeated Slovakia, 2-1. Vanek scored the lone goal in the game-winning shots portion to give Austria the victory.

Vanek had the game-winner, plus four shots, in the game. He was a minus-1 in 22:56 ice time and had three shots in the overtime period.

On the other side, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Andrej Sekera had two shots in 25:47 ice time. He led his team in ice time and played 37 shifts in today’s game.

Austria next faces Finland on May 11, while Slovakia will face Russia on May 12.

In other news, Rochester Americans forward Zemgus Girgensons was suspended one game by the IIHF for butt-ending a Slovakian player. He’ll miss Latvia’s game against Germany on Saturday and will be eligible to return to play on May 13 when the team faces France.
