Earlier this morning, I posted our Daily Dasherboard, which contained a link to an article Garth at Hockey Buzz wrote about QMJHL sophomore goalie Zach Fucale, who just backstopped the Halifx Mooseheads to the Memorial Cup.
Garth’s opinion was that drafting Fucale was a logical move for the Buffalo Sabres, for two reasons: he could be a future NHL-er, and the Sabres look to be parting ways with Ryan Miller; and having good goaltenders in your system is akin to having a whole stack of poker chips to bargain with when it comes trade time.
Judging by the comments that followed Garth’s article, it would appear that many fans do not want to see the Sabres waste an early pick on Fucale. After all, the Sabres still have Miller, Jhonas Enroth, Matt Hackett, David Leggio, Connor Knapp, Nathan Lieuwin, and Andrey Makarov – why bother wasting a pick on a position the Sabres have already stocked?
On the other hand, Garth might be onto something: having a stockpile of quality goalies would allow Buffalo to create a package that could allow them to make a trade for top-tier talent, a course of action that many Sabres’ fans currently favor. Besides – who in the system do fans feel confident about? Hackett and Leggio are good goalies . . . in the AHL. Can they start 50+ games in the NHL any time soon? And of Knapp, Lieuwin, and Makarov, it’s Makarov who seems to have the biggest upside – yet it was Fucale, not Makarov, who brought home the hardware in the QMJHL this year, not Makarov. What if Fucale is the next Ryan Miller – the Sabres would kick themselves for passing him up, wouldn’t they?
