Sabres fans, to this day, still talk about that dreaded Free Agent Frenzy in 2007 when we lost both Chris Drury and Daniel Briere. Could the “Cookie Monster” be making his way back to Buffalo?
The answer is, yes.
In a text message to the Buffalo News, Briere announced that 8 teams are in the running for Briere’s services when free agency opens on Friday, and that the Sabres are among the options. So, Sabres fans, do we want him back?
Personally, I would be perfectly fine with the signing, and no, I do not have a #48 jersey to bring out of retirement to influence this opinion. The situation could ideally be a win-win for both parties.
The Sabres would get a seasoned veteran, who still has a little left in the tank, to help along the progress of the youth movement. Briere has played both center and wing, so he could help teach players like Cody Hodgson, Mikhail Grigorenko, Joel Armia, Marcus Foligno, Johan Larsson, and others. Briere has always maintained a positive deameanor, which is nothing but good for what may be an often dejected locker room next season. He would also potentially help out a power play that was putrid last season.
If signed, the Sabres could flip Briere at the trade deadline for a draft pick or prospect, sending him to an actual Stanley Cup contender. So, the arrangement could actually work to benefit all involved. Plus, we get a blast from the past to root for, as it appears we may have a rough season ahead.
