Hit: Free Agency
When July 5th came and went without the Buffalo Sabres grabbing any free agents, Twitter was flooded with fans lamenting GM Darcy Regier‘s total lack
of activity. I, on the other hand, found the fact that Regier was not lured into the “Ryan Clowe is worth 15 years and $102 million” game show one of the smartest things he has done. Sure, there were some free agents I would have enjoyed seeing in the blue and gold – but not at the prices the Sabres would have had to pay to get them. NHL teams threw around money like they were pulling in profits, and I’m pretty sure a bunch of them claimed they were in the red just a summer ago. Even after the feeding frenzy, Buffalo was wise to avoid going after players like Brenden Morrow or Jaromir Jagr, since they would have been asking for way more than they are actual worth. Regier is wise to hold off and focus on which of the Sabres’ free agents he is going to sign, so score this one a hit for the franchise.
