Season Outlook: Buffalo Sabres vs. Edmonton Oilers

The Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers do not meet very often; the last time was in January 2012. Prior to that? December 2010. This upcoming season however, things will be different, as the team will meet not once, but twice.

Edmonton and Buffalo will face each other twice this coming NHL season, once in each venue.

Edmonton and Buffalo last faced off on January 3, 2012 in Buffalo. The Sabres won 4-3 with all but one goal coming from players who are no longer on the team: Pominville, Leopold, Stafford and Gerbe all scored. Brayden McNabb had a pair of assists, and Drew Stafford had a goal and two assists. Sam Gagner had a goal and an assist for the Oilers in the loss.

The Edmonton Oilers finished 12th in the Western Conference with 45 points and a record of 19-22-7. The Oilers are run by young talent. Taylor Hall put up a 50-point campaign last year despite the shortened season; Sam Gagner had 38 points, Jordan Eberle 37 and Nail Yakupov 31 to round of the top four on the team. Don’t forget the likes of Justin Schultz and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Perhaps the most notable free agent for the Oilers was the acquisition of defenseman Denis Grebeshkov from the KHL. Grebeshkov, previously a member of the Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, has played the last three seasons in the KHL but is making his return to North America with the Oilers this coming season.

The Oilers also acquired forward Ryan Hamilton and defenseman Andrew Ference, both of whom should fit nicely in the Edmonton system. Ference has nine points (2-7) in 37 career games against Buffalo.

Edmonton also made several trades, including swapping out youngster Magnus Paajarvi for forward David Perron and dropping Shawn Horcoff to Dallas for Philip Larsen.

Players to Watch:

  • EDMONTON: How about any of the Oilers’ young players? Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner and Taylor Hall have combined for four points against Buffalo; Eberle and Hall have played two games, Gagner three, versus the Sabres. Also look for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov to make splashes in their first career NHL games against the Buffalo Sabres.
  • BUFFALO: First up on the list: defenseman Mike Weber, who’s scored 1/3 of his career NHL goals against the Edmonton OIlers. Okay, so they both came in one game, but… that counts for something, right?! The Oilers and Jets are Weber’s most-scored-on Western Conference teams. Christian Ehrhoff has nine career points against Edmonton, while Steve Ott has 10 points (4-6). Drew Stafford has tallied seven points (5-2) in his NHL career against the Edmonton OIlers while Thomas Vanek has tallied six.
